To the Moon and Back – Chapter Four

Chapter 4: It was all Yellow

Jinjing stepped off his magnificent yellow spacecraft, a glitzy yellow suit adorning his sturdy frame. Alana was instantly captivated by his presence – his dark hair impeccably styled, shoes gleaming like polished metal, and deep blue shades adding an air of mystery to his already mesmerizing aura.

He removed his shades, revealing eyes that shone bright with confidence. Alana found herself drawn to his dazzling smile.

“Jeffery, my old friend, you didn’t think I’d miss the chance to pay you a visit, did you?” Jinjing exclaimed, his voice smooth as silk as he approached Jeffrey with a swagger that oozed charisma.

Jeffrey’s expression remained guarded as he greeted Jinjing with a nod. “Jinjing, it’s been a while,” he replied, his tone cautious.

Jinjing nodded at Jeffery and winked at Alana, a playful glint in his eyes. “And who might this lovely lady be? I don’t believe we’ve had the pleasure of being introduced.”

“I’m Alana,” she replied, offering a tentative smile. “Nice to meet you, Jinjing.”

Jinjing’s smile widened, a charming twinkle in his eye. “Ah, Alana, a pleasure indeed. You have the honor of meeting the one and only Jinjing, master of the algorithm and purveyor of all things fabulous.”

Alana raised an eyebrow, intrigued by his self-assured demeanor. “The algorithm, you say?”

Jinjing nodded, his expression serious for a moment before breaking into a grin. “That’s right, darling. It’s all about the algorithm. But enough about me. Tell me, Jeffrey, how have you been? Still tinkering away with those space samples of yours?”

Jeffrey hesitated, his gaze flickering briefly towards Alana before returning to Jinjing. “I’ve been… busy,” he replied evasively.

Jinjing’s smile never wavered as he clapped Jeffrey on the shoulder with a knowing grin. “Well, we’ll have plenty of time to catch up, old friend. But for now, let’s focus on the task at hand. There’s business to attend to, and I have a feeling it’s going to be quite… lucrative.”

With that cryptic remark, Jinjing turned on his heel and gestured towards his spacecraft, leaving Alana and Jeffrey to exchange uneasy glances as they braced themselves for what lay ahead. They watched Jinjing walk towards his huge yellow spacecraft parked several feet away, and Alana couldn’t shake the feeling that his arrival heralded the beginning of a storm that threatened to upend their peaceful existence in the Lunar Oasis.

As Jinjing disappeared into his spacecraft, Alana and Jeffrey exchanged a worried glance. There was something about Jinjing’s demeanor that set their nerves on edge, a sense of impending trouble that lingered in the air.

“We need to be cautious, Jeffrey,” Alana murmured, her voice low with concern. “I don’t trust him one bit.”

Jeffrey nodded, his expression grim. “I agree, Alana. We’ll have to keep a close eye on him and tread carefully. I have a feeling he’s up to something, and it’s not going to be good for any of us.”

With a heavy sigh, Jeffrey led Alana back to the Lunar Oasis, where they spent the rest of the day on edge, anxiously awaiting Jinjing’s next move. As the hours ticked by, tension hung thick in the air, casting a shadow over their once peaceful existence on the moon.

Despite the unease, they remained vigilant, determined to uncover Jinjing’s true intentions and put a stop to whatever nefarious scheme he had in mind. For in the vast expanse of space, surrounded by mysteries and unknown dangers, they knew that their survival depended on their ability to outwit their adversaries and protect the fragile peace of the Lunar Oasis.

The next day Alana and Jeffery receive a yellow envelope, which is an invitation for dinner with Jinjing in his yellow spacecraft. They stare at the envelope, a sense of trepidation settling over them. The summoning was unexpected, to say the least, and the instructions within to follow a dress code of formal attire in yellow only added to their apprehension.

Patty, ever curious, peered over their shoulders at the invitation. “Dinner with Jinjing? Sounds like fun! Can I come too?” he asked eagerly.

Jeffrey hesitated, his brow furrowing with concern. “I’m not sure that’s such a good idea, Patty. Jinjing isn’t exactly a cat person.”

Patty’s ears drooped slightly at the rejection, but he quickly perked up again. “Well, suit yourself. But don’t blame me if the party is a drag in my absence!”

Turning his attention back to Alana, Jeffrey sighed. “And I don’t own a yellow suit, either.”

Alana bit her lip, her mind racing as she tried to come up with a solution to their predicament. “I might have something yellow to wear, but I didn’t exactly consider packing formal attire for our trip to the moon,” she admitted, her voice tinged with frustration.

Jeffrey nodded in understanding, a hint of anxiety creeping into his expression. “We’ll figure something out, Alana. But for now, I think it’s best if we accept Jinjing’s invitation. We need to find out what he’s up to, and dinner might provide us with some answers.”

Alana nodded in agreement, steeling herself for the challenges that lay ahead. With Jinjing’s invitation hanging over them like a shadow, they prepared to face whatever surprises awaited them. Alana couldn’t help but wonder what secrets Jinjing held, and what his mysterious invitation entailed.

With no seemly formal yellow attire in sight, Alana and Jeffrey resigned themselves to the inevitable and drafted a letter to Jinjing, politely explaining their quandary and requesting an exemption from the dress code for the dinner.

Chef Bot, ever efficient, was entrusted with delivering the letter to Jinjing’s spacecraft, and they waited anxiously for a response. To their surprise, Chef Bot returned shortly after, not with a letter, but with packages in tow. Alana and Jeffrey exchanged bewildered glances as they unwrapped the parcels, revealing two sets of stunning yellow formalwear, perfectly tailored to fit.

“Looks like Jinjing has come through for us,” Jeffrey remarked, a hint of bemusement in his voice as he examined the attire.

Alana couldn’t help but appreciate the craftsmanship of the garments as she slipped into her dress, the fabric shimmering in the dim lights of the Lunar Oasis. “It’s… certainly yellow,” she commented with a wry smile, adjusting the fit.

Patty, who had been watching the proceedings with great interest, mewed excitedly and rubbed against Alana’s legs. “I’m going to accompany you two to dinner too! Jinjing sounds like a blast!”

Jeffrey sighed, shaking his head. “I hope you’re right, Patty. But remember, Jinjing isn’t exactly known for his hospitality.”

As they made their way to the yellow spacecraft, Alana felt a paradox of emotions bubble within her. Dinner with Jinjing promised to be an eventful affair, and she couldn’t wait to uncover the secrets that lay hidden beneath his charming façade. When they stepped aboard the bright yellow spacecraft, Alana knew it was sure to be a night they wouldn’t soon forget.

Alana, Jeffrey, and Patty were greeted by the sight of opulence and extravagance that surpassed even their wildest expectations. The interior was lined with sparkling crystals, and the air was filled with the tantalizing aroma of a luxurious feast.

“Welcome, my dear friends, to the Yellow Diamond,” Jinjing exclaimed, his voice smooth as silk as he gestured towards the grand dining table. “I trust you’ll find the accommodations to your liking.”

Alana marveled at the splendor of their surroundings as they took their seats at the expansive table. Robot minotaur butlers glided effortlessly around the room, their metallic forms gleaming in the soft light as they served trays laden with bright yellow fizzy drinks and hors d’oeuvres.

“So, Alana, Jeffrey, tell me, what do you think of my humble abode?” Jinjing asked, his eyes glistening with mischief as he raised a glass in a toast. “It’s all about the algorithm, you know.”

“It’s quite… impressive, Jinjing,” Jeffrey replied diplomatically, reluctantly taking a sip of his drink. It had the most unusual taste and was bizarrely invigorating.

Alana nodded in agreement, her eyes scanning the array of delicacies laid out before them. “Yes, very… yellow,” she added with a playful smile.

Jinjing laughed, a rich, melodious sound that filled the room with warmth. “Ah, but of course! Yellow is the color of innovation, of creativity, of… possibility. And here in the Yellow Diamond, anything is possible.”

The evening wore on, the group engaged in small talk and lively conversation, their laughter mingling with the clinking of glasses and tinkering of cutlery. As the evening progressed, Jinjing couldn’t help but observe Patty with a mixture of curiosity and interest. He had never been particularly fond of cats, but there was something about this one that intrigued him.

The fact that Patty could talk, had an unusual appetite, and seemed remarkably intelligent made him stand out from the average feline.

“You’re not half bad for a cat, Patty,” Jinjing remarked, his tone laced with a hint of surprise. “I must say, you’re quite the… unique creature. I’m pleased to have you join us for dinner.”

Patty purred in response, his tail swishing back and forth with satisfaction. “Why, thank you, Jinjing. It’s not every day I get invited to dine with such illustrious company.”

Jinjing chuckled, a gleam of amusement in his eyes. “Indeed, Patty. And speaking of illustrious company, I must say, I’m pleased to see that you’ve all chosen to grace us with your presence in the attire I provided.”

Alana and Jeffrey exchanged a glance, a sense of dread settling over them at Jinjing’s words. They knew that beneath his charming exterior, there was something sinister lurking, and they couldn’t shake the feeling that they were being drawn into a dangerous game.

The small talk soon ceased, and Jeffrey dared to broach the subject that had been weighing on their minds since Jinjing’s arrival.

“So, Jinjing, why are you really here on the moon?” Jeffrey asked, his voice steady despite the nervous flutter in his stomach.

Jinjing’s eyes gleamed with malice as he let out an evil laugh, his lips curling into a twisted smile. “Ah, Jeffrey, always the curious one. But you know what they say… it’s all about the algorithm.”

Alana felt a chill run down her spine, but despite the fear that gnawed at her insides, she knew that she couldn’t remain silent in the face of threat.

“Jinjing, what do you want?” she asked, her voice trembling slightly.

Jinjing’s gaze flickered towards her, triumph dancing in his eyes. “Oh, my dear Alana, you’ll find out soon enough. But for now, let’s enjoy the festivities, shall we? After all, it’s all about the algorithm.”

His words hung in the air, and Alana’s gut told her that they were teetering on the edge of something far more ominous than conceived. Jinjing instructed one of his minotaurs to bring in the dessert. Once again Alana and Jeffrey exchanged wary glances, their apprehension growing with each passing moment.

The minotaur returned bearing a large yellow jello cake, its surface shimmering in the soft light of the spacecraft. Jinjing sliced into the cake, revealing fortune cookies trapped within; Jeffery frowned and Alana was consumed by nerves that settled over her like a suffocating blanket.

“These fortune cookies hold the answers you seek,” Jinjing declared, his voice dripping with sinister intent as he gestured towards the desserts. “Eat, my dear guests, and let the fortunes guide you.”

Alana and Jeffrey, expressions guarded, slowly and carefully ate their way to the hidden fortune cookies buried within the cake. With trembling hands, they each retrieved a cookie of their own, their hearts pounding as they prepared to uncover the secrets held within.

Jeffrey broke open his cookie first, retrieving the slip of paper within. His eyes widened in horror as he read the alarming message printed on the tiny chit: “You will watch me take over the moon.”

Alana’s heart sank as she watched Jeffrey’s reaction, her own hands shaking as she broke open her own cookie and retrieved the slip of paper within. Her breath caught in her throat as she read the chilling words printed on the fortune: “Choose the winning side, which is my side.”

The fortune cookies were not mere novelties—they were a warning, an omen of the danger that lurked beneath Jinjing’s charismatic disguise. With a sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach, Alana peeked towards Jinjing, who raised “do you trust the algorithm, Alana?”
